Bangladesh Sociological Association
University of Dhaka, Bangladesh
December 21-22, 2012
Abstracts: November 30, 2012 Bangladesh Sociological Association (with support from International Sociological Association) invites participation in its bi-annual conference 2012 on December 21-22, 2012 at the Senate House Auditorium, University of Dhaka.
South Asia is undergoing unprecedented social change in the 21at century. The South Asian drama of development and social change is marked by rapid economic growth, growing unevenness, and violence: all are vital issues for sociological analysis. The aim of the conference is to look into the nature of this change, its drivers and consequences. Modernization (and re-modernization in recent years) has been the keyword for understanding this process of social change in the region for over the last fifty years. The central issues the conference will address are: how far modernization, re-modernization and globalization are adequate to understand the process of development and social change in South Asia and its variations across nations and regions; and how to ensure social justice and equality for millions of the poor in the age of globalization and neo-liberalism. The main sessions will be organized around the following themes:
• Rethinking modernization: A South Asian perspective
• In search of social justice in the age of globalization
• Poverty, inequality and violence: nations, regions and lessons
• Urban transition, social capital, collective action and anomie
