Full Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada. Presently working on two funded research projects - one interdisciplinary, the other, interdisciplinary and international - and co-editing the forthcoming New Handbook of International Sociology (Sage), a selection of revised papers which were presented at the 2002 Mid-Term Research Council Conference in Ottawa.

Author or co-author of numerous articles and book chapters, two co-authored books and a co-edited special journal issue. Research has focussed on power relations and resistance, within and between societies in the Economic North and South, in particular on the intersection of gender, ethnicity/race and class. Specific topics include: use of the Internet by minorities; impact of society-centred engineering programmes on student retention; women’s paid and unpaid work, especially in Canada and the Commonwealth Caribbean; the effects of globalization and state policies on women in different social and geographical locations; contributions of feminism to theory and methodology in sociology.
