Current position

The Max Weber Professor at the University of Erfurt and director of the Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies there. He is also professor of sociology and member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He is a regular member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin and has recently become a permanent non-resident fellow of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences. He held visiting professorships at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the New School for Social Research, New York, Duke University, University of Vienna etc. From 1990-2002 he was professor of sociology and North American studies at the Free University of Berlin and 1993-95 director of the John F. Kennedy Institute in Berlin.
He is the former president of the ISA Research Committee on Theory and was for a long time a member of the executive board of the German Sociological Association.
He is on the editorial board of several leading international sociological journals (Archives européennes de sociologie; Acta sociologica; American Journal of Sociology, etc.).
