Professor of Sociology and Head of School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Nottingham, UK. President of ISA Research Committee 52 Sociology of Professional Groups from 1996 until 2004; successfully developed the Thematic Group to Working Group and to full Research Committee status. Continues as Vice-President.In 1999 was appointed Editor of Sage Studies in International Sociology, an ISA book series. Successfully negotiated (with Sage and ISA) the development of two additional issues of the ISA journal Current Sociology as monograph issues of edited collections produced by ISA Research Committees and National Associations. Has continued as Editor of both the book series and CS monograph issues and last year appointment was extended until 2009.
Research has focused on issues to do with career (including gender differences) and professional work in occupational groups including teaching, science and engineering, banking, the armed forces, journalism, social work and foster care. Current research includes analysis of differences between occupational and organizational forms of professionalism.
Author of four books and two edited collections; author of 49 papers in refereed journals.
