Travel Grant for Non-Japanese Young Scholars from Overseas
The 81st Annual Meeting of the Japan Sociological Society (JSS)

Applications: June 20, 2008

The International Liaison Committee of the Japan Sociological Society has established a new travel grants program. It enables young sociologists to participate in the JSS annual meeting in Japan as follows. The program provides a valuable opportunity to advance their research activities. Successful applicants are expected to exchange ideas with Japanese sociologists. Applicants should e-mail materials by June 20, 2008.

Place: Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan
Application Deadline: June 20, 2008

JSS will offer travel grants to up to 6 young scholars from overseas who plan to present papers at regular sessions. Successful applicants will be provided fifty thousand (50,000) yen for travel expenses.

A regular session lasts for 2 hours with about 4 papers. A paper is presented in 15 minutes and discussion follows. Choose up to three sessions among 28 sessions, including English sessions (see Application Form). Note that you can use English only in English sessions. In other sessions, papers should be presented in Japanese.
If you are NOT a current member of JSS, registration fees will be exempted at the meeting. Successful applicants will be encouraged to submit full papers to JSS’s official English journal, International Journal of Japanese Sociology.

Applicants should satisfy all of the following conditions. Priority will basically be given to the applicants who hold an Asian nationality (except Japanese) and/or live in Asian countries.

  1. A member of their own national sociological association or equivalent.
  2. Having a master’s degree after 1998, or being below 35 years old at the time of the meeting.
  3. Not a Japanese citizen.
  4. Having home, work, or school address in a country other than Japan.

Applicants must submit following materials. All materials should be written in English.

(1) Application Form for Travel Grant (see below).
(2) One-page Abstract (Microsoft Word file or PDF file) (PDF file is recommended)
Tables and figures can be used. (Layout) One-page A4 paper. 20mm margins. No page numbers. Text: about 35 lines in single column. Paper title (14 point font), subtitle (12 point font), institution(s) and name(s) (11 point font) on the top. Text (11 point font) follows.
(3) Two-page Summary (Microsoft Word file or PDF file) (PDF file is recommended)
Tables and figures can be used. (Layout) Two-page A4 paper. 20mm margins. Text: single space in single column. Paper title (14 point font), subtitle (12 point font), institution(s) and name(s) (11 point font) on the top. Text (11 point font) follows. Summary should be distributed for 30 copies at a session.

All applications will be reviewed by JSS-ILC selection committee. Results will be informed by the end of July 2008.
