Initiative for translating books published in languages other than English

In 2008-9, the Publications Committee launched an initiative to seek outstanding (canonical) books that have appeared in different languages. This was done on the basis of an agreement with SAGE that a book or books that would be accepted by their editorial committee would be translated and published in English under the aegis of the ISA.

Members of ISA nominated twenty-two books that had been published in Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, and Spanish. Unfortunately, the editorial committee at SAGE found that they could not choose any of the books suggested this year as 'canonical'.

The search for publications in languages other than English which are ground-breaking, novel, and of outstanding significance to the development of sociology will, however, go on.

For 2010, nominations will be accepted until July 1, 2010.

Please send the following details about the book that you would like to propose:

  • author and author's cv
  • book  title
  • abstract
  • table of contents, and
  • information about the impact the book has made on sociology in the language in which it was published originally
