Department of Sociology, University of Cape Town in South Africa invites applications for the above post with effect from January 2010.

Applicants at Associate Professor level should have a PhD and be able to show evidence of high-quality academic work (research, publications, postgraduate supervision, leadership, teaching and social responsiveness), as well as a strong track record in research and publication.

Applicants at Senior Lecturer/Lecturer level should have a PhD (or, in the case of Lecturer, have made significant progress towards completion), a strong emerging research profile and experience in teaching appropriate to the rank applied for.

The Department is seeking someone ideally with particular interests in teaching social theory and research methods. The successful candidate will also have strong research and teaching interests in areas of general sociology, such as power and inequality, diversity studies, issues of class or race or gender, cultural studies, and health studies.

The Department offers undergraduate majors in General Sociology and Industrial Sociology, and the appointee will contribute to the enhancement of an innovative undergraduate teaching programme. At postgraduate level, we have four coursework Master’s streams comprising Sociology, Industrial Sociology, Development Studies and Diversity Studies the appointee will work with teams to consolidate the academic and professional training at this level. Work in developing a postgraduate culture in the Department at PhD level will be particularly valued. As the Department has a long history of social responsiveness to community issues, evidence of academic work with respect to the ’scholarship of engagement’ is considered important.

Appointment will take place at the senior or junior level in alignment with the Faculty criteria for promotion. The annual remuneration packages for 2009, including benefits, are as follows: Associate Professor – R460 148; Senior Lecturer – R393 743; Lecturer – R332 221.
