A new publication for the International Sociological association, the E-Bulletin was launched electronically in 2005. This was conceptuailsed as a space for showcasing the work, practices, ideas and voices of the diverse community of sociologists, engaged in substantive, ethnographic, demographic, theoretical, historical and critical research, and operating out of different locations, both sociological and geographic.
To-date a total of 13 issues have been published. Each issue carries at least two feature essays by social scientists operating in different parts of the world, as well as an ‘In Conversation’ segment that has become a space for important conversations with eminent, practicing sociologists, presented in the form of in depth interviews together with an audio recording of the conversation. Other features include a ‘Reflections’ section that carries voices of sociologists, including graduate students, a ‘Visual Essays’ segment that takes advantage of the technology that is available in an electronic medium and showcases the growing value of visual imagery in the work that many sociologists are now engaged in.
The E-Bulletin has also introduced a section entitled ‘Reporting a Conference’ allowing sociologists to document and reflect on their experiences of participating in a workshop or conference. Some issues have also carried a special issue focusing on core issues in the practice of the discipline that concern sociologists globally.
From its inception, the document was intended as a forum in which ISA members could not only present their work but also engage in scholarly debates and discussions. The issues that have been published thus far have fulfilled the first of these functions but the second remains to be followed through. As editor, I welcome feedback, comments and contributions from all readers to further enhance and improve the E-Bulletin for the benefit of ISA members.
