L'Association Internationale de Sociologie est dirigée par l'Assemblée des Conseils, qui est composée de tous les membres du Conseil des Associations Nationales et du Conseil de Recherche.
Le Conseil des Associations Nationales est formé par un délégué de chaque pays membre. Le Conseil de Recherche est composé de représentants de tous les Comités de Recherche et responsable des activités scientifiques de l'ISA.
Tous les quatre ans, pendant le Congrès Mondial de Sociologie, l'Assemblée des Conseils élit le Président et les Vice-Présidents. Chaque Conseil élit 8 membres du Comité Exécutif, lequel est chargé de gérer les affaires de l'Association pendant la période entre deux congrès. Le Secrétariat exécute les décisions et s'occupe des questions administratives.
Les membres du Comité Exécutif ont des fonctions dans au moins un des sous-comités suivants:
The remit of the Research Coordinating Committee is to approve the formation of Thematic Groups, to examine applications for the establishment of Working Groups and Research Committees, to review their activities and to put forward to the Executive Committee recommendations on both particular cases and general policy.
