Emma Porio
PHILIPPINES

Dr. Emma Porio is Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines) and member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Sociological Society. Under her leadership (1996-2002), the department was selected as a Center of Excellence for Sociology by the Commission of Higher Education. She directs the Gender Studies Program of the university and also edits the Philippine Sociological Review (PSR). She was also Chairman, Governing Council, Philippine Social Science Council (2004-2006); President, Philippine Sociological Society (1999-2002), President of the Institute of Development and Policy Research (1995-1999). She is a member of ISA’s RC09.

She also sits in the Board of Trustees of the following organizations: the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC), Urban Research Consortium (URC), Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (ALIWW), The Researchers Forum for Human Settlements (Rome), International Cooperative Housing Foundation (Washington DC), the Huairou Commission (New York), and the Women’s Education, Development, Productivity and Research Organization (WEDPRO). She also sits in the editorial board of Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (Routledge), Contemporary Politics (London), and Social Movement Studies (London).

For the past 10 years, Dr. Porio has done extensive research on children, urban poverty, urban development and governance. She has served as consultant to the World Bank (WB), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Asian Development Bank (ADB), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), AUSAID, and UN agencies like the UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, ILO, and WHO. She has written several books including Partnership with the Poor, Pathways to Decentralization, Urban Children in Distress, and Urban Governance and Poverty Alleviation in Southeast Asia.
