Emma Porio
PHILIPPINES

Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Ateneo de Manila University and ex-officio Chair of the Governing Council of the Philippine Social Science Council. She edits the Philippine Sociological Review, and president of the Institute of Development and Policy Research. She sits on the board of the Researchers Forum for Human Settlements (Rome), Water and Sanitation Council (Rome), International Cooperative Housing Foundation (Washington DC) and the Huairou Commission (New York). She also sits in the editorial board of the Journal of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore), Social Movements (London), Inter-Cultural Studies Asia (Sage/Taiwan) and Contemporary Politics (London).

Currently, she represents Asia in the Scientific Committee of the International Forum on Urban Poverty of the UNCHS and the ISA in the Global Development Network.

For the past 15 years, she has been active in the secretariat of the Inter-ASEAN University Seminar Series on Social Development. For the past 20 years, Dr. Porio has done extensive research on children, urban poverty, gender, and governance. She has served as consultant to the World Bank (WB), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Asian Development Bank (ADB), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), AUSAID, and UN agencies like the UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, ILO, and WHO. She has written several books including Partnership with the Poor, Pathways to Decentralization, Urban Children in Distress, and Urban Governance and Poverty Alleviation in Southeast Asia.
