RC09 Social Transformations and Sociology of Development

Objectives

The Research Committee on Social Transformations and Sociology of Development (RC09) brings together scholars dedicated to examining the dynamics of development and social change across global, national, and local contexts. We welcome a wide spectrum of theoretical orientations, methodological approaches— qualitative, quantitative, digital, and mixed methods—and epistemological standpoints on social transformation and development.

RC09 fosters critical and interdisciplinary dialogue on pressing global challenges such as climate justice, digitalization and socio-technical implications of AI, algorithmic systems and datafication, migration, intersectional intimacies and inequalities, development trajectories, social and political polarization, and emerging forms of governance, legalities and solidarity. We support scholarship that engages both structural and agentic dimensions of change, amplifying voices of a connected community of scholars able to overcome the epistemic dichotomy between Global North and South, bridging academic, policy, and activist communities.

Our goal is to deepen sociological understanding of how power, inequality, sustainability, and transformations interact across diverse contexts in the Global North and the Global South. Through inclusive, reflexive, and globally engaged research, RC09 contributes to a sociology that is not only analytically rigorous but also ethically grounded and socially committed.
