ISA Supports ESA Statement on Serbia

The International Sociological Association (ISA) endorses the recent statement of the European Sociological Association (ESA) regarding the situation in the Republic of Serbia.

In line with the ESA, the ISA reaffirms its profound concern regarding the current tensions and their impact on academic communities. The ISA does not take a position on political disputes, but calls on all actors to respect human rights, non-violence, freedom of expression, academic freedom, and the peaceful and democratic resolution of conflicts through dialogue.

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Serbia and stress that universities must remain spaces of independent thought, open debate, and critical reflection, protected from aggressions or interferences that could undermine the free exchange of ideas. Strengthening these principles is essential not only to protect academic life, but also to contribute to the construction of more democratic, just, and inclusive societies.
