The “City of Lights”, a modern capital with rich history
Rabat is Morocco's capital, located on the northwest coast and home to around 2 million people in its metropolitan area. Influenced by the Maamora forest and urban green spaces called the green belt, the city has a favorable climate. Founded in the 12th century as a fortified camp named "Ribat" ("fortification" in Arabic), it has grown into a vibrant city it is today. Rabat, elected for the Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI) presidency in 2024, features UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Kasbah of the Udayas and Chellah Necropolis, and numerous museums including the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the Contemporary Art and the History and Civilization one. As Morocco's political, diplomatic, and administrative hub, Rabat offers modern infrastructure and amenities such as an airport, trams, shopping centers, coffee shops, and restaurants, contributing to its appeal and visitors’ comfort.
