TG13 Queer Sociology

Contact TG13 at isa-tg13@isa-sociology.org

Thematic Group 13 was established in February 2026.

Objectives

Despite significant advances in the sociological study of gender and sexuality, queer perspectives remain relatively underrepresented in the discipline’s central theoretical and methodological debates. Across much sociological scholarship and professional community-building, queerness is still frequently treated as a specialized or identity-based niche rather than as a lens capable of rethinking sociology and sociological theory more broadly. TG13 responds to this by providing a sustained home for queer sociology within the ISA, bringing together scholars with diverse lived experiences, including differences in geography, language, and social position. It challenges heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions embedded in sociological knowledge production and encourages reflexive engagement with how sociological categories, methods, and forms of evidence may reproduce normative assumptions and epistemic hierarchies. TG13 envisions a sociology that not only studies queer lives but is itself queered – critical, self-reflexive, innovative, and attentive to how knowledge can reproduce or resist inequality. By queering the sociological imagination, TG13 seeks to contribute to a more just, plural, and imaginative discipline.
